Le 20 avril 2010, l'océan a été pris en otage suite à l'explosion de la plateforme pétrolière BP dans le Golfe du Mexique. La défaillance de la soupape de sécurité automatique de fond (BOP) et de la procédure de colmatage a conduit à la perte de contrôle du puits pendant trois mois (onze morts, une marée noire de quatre millions de barils a pollué l'océan). BP a également déversé cinq millions de litres de dispersants toxiques dans les écosystèmes marins. Les effets en cascade dans la chaîne alimentaire ont été dévastateurs, bien que la presse et les médias du monde entier en aient peu parlé : plus de 6000 oiseaux mazoutés, des milliers d'animaux morts (tortues, cétacés dont des centaines de dauphins adultes et nouveau-nés échoués sur les plages début 2011...), -vingt-cinq kilomètres de côtes noircies. Les bayous peuvent mettre vingt ou trente ans à retrouver leur état naturel . Des milliers de kilomètres carrés étaient interdits aux bateaux de pêche.
